What is Reiki?A light-touch form of bodywork therapy which transmits energy and healing through the hands of the practitioner. It is a holistic therapy which means that it treats the whole person, not just symptoms of disease.
How does it work?Reiki energy is transmitted through the hands of the practitioner to the patient, enabling the body to mobilise its own natural healing resources, having a positive effect on the whole person physically, mentally and emotionally.
Will it make me better?Reiki causes the release of toxins stored in the system, raises the immune system, and relaxes the person completely, creating conditions within which the body may restore itself, reverse the dis-ease process and achieve optimum vitality. The effects of Reiki continue to work long after a treatment and with regular treatment the effects accumu-late.
What does a treatment involve? You may lie on a couch or sit in a comfortable chair fully clothed. The practitioner lays her hands on your shoulders or chest and gradually moves them to various parts of your body. You may talk or remain silent, the choice is yours. There is no need for any intellectual or other participation on the part of the patient.
What will I feel? Many people experience Reiki as warmth or heat which penetrates the body, or some people experience tingling, tremors, pulsing, chill, weight or weightlessness.
How many treatments are needed? That depends entirely on you. Your practitioner will advise you, and you decide. There is no commitment to any number of treatments.
What are the overall benefits of Reiki?Relaxation, calm, peace, wellbeing, ability to let go of anxieties and fears, even long-term problems and deeply-rooted troubles, greater energy and vitality and a more positive attitude to life and others.
What conditions does Reiki treat?Reiki, as an holistic therapy, treats you, not what is wrong with you!
However, that is not really a very helpful answer, so I list below just some of the things I personally have known Reiki to treat successfully:
Stress, anxiety, depression, migraine, headache, insomnia, IBS, chronic fatigue, ME, dietary disorders, indigestion, liver and gall-bladder problems, infantile colic, back pain, neck pain, jaw pain, cramp, arthritis, high blood pressure, recurrent infections, allergies, wounds and bruises, PMT, unexplained rashes and lumps, hyperactivity and learning difficulties…….
Reiki is also very effective during pregnancy and after the birth on mother and child, after surgery, before examinations to enhance uptake of information and reduce anxiety, when grief is overwhelming and it is exceptionally helpful where there is need for life-changing decisions to be made.
Where did Reiki originate? In the mid-nineteenth century, Dr Mikao Usui, a distinguished Japanese scholar, researched many ancient sources in the West and the East, seeking a method of healing through the hands that had, according to tradition, writings and belief, been practised in olden times.
Eventually, after studying many languages, he discovered a formula in obscure Sanskrit writings. This led him to undertake a 21 day meditation on Mt Kuryama near Kyoto, Japan, following which he received a remarkable confirmation of the healing properties of the energy renewal system he named ‘Rei-ki’.
After fulfilling a seven year mission in a beggars’ camp, Dr Usui set about teaching Reiki and trained Dr Chujiro Hayashi of Tokyo, a retired naval officer, as his successor. He died in 1941.
Dr Hayashi appointed Mrs Hawayo Takata of Hawaii to ensure the survival of the technique during and after World War II. In the decade before her death in 1980 Mrs Takata started teaching in mainland USA and trained the Rev. Beth Gray as the first Western Reiki Master in 1973. The original traditions of Reiki have been faithfully preserved within the Usui Reiki network internationally in direct lineage by Beth Gray’s successor, Barbara McGregor who understudied Beth during a seven-year apprenticeship. Mrs McGregor, a well-known editor/publisher and public-speaker has taught Reiki internationally since 1990 and it is from her that I first learned Reiki in 1995. This led me to become a practising complementary therapist in Reiki, the Bowen Technique and latterly Hopi Ear Candling, Flower Remedies and Emotional Balancing.
